Bringing Catalonia’s beloved celebration of books and roses to New York City since 2014, Sant Jordi NYC 2021 (April 19 – 24) extends its reach even further in its virtual format, creating a vibrant, interactive space for authors, translators, and readers from around the world to share their love of literature.

This year, Sant Jordi NYC will feature over 50 events with authors and translators from around the world—from France to Korea, from Brazil to India. Highlights will include a sneak preview of Inseparable, a previously unknown novel by Simone de Beauvoir, translated by Sandra Smith; a conversation with Nika Pfeifer, the author of Violante, an innovative, time-hopping exploration of a 16th-century honor killing that’s been described as ‘grand opera meets Quentin Tarantino’; a chat with translator Charlotte Whittle about Notes from Childhood, a memoir in vignettes by celebrated Argentine modernist Norah Lange, a contemporary of Borges whose brilliance is finally being appreciated in its own right; Flora Thomson-DeVeaux’s new translation of the great Brazilian classic, The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas by Machado de Assis; Julia Sanches’ translation of Eva Baltasar’s eagerly-awaited Permafrost, a “discomfiting book about a sensual intoxication,” and so much more.

This year’s festival will also include publishers’ corners, highlighting the remarkable work of Archipelago Books, Fum d’Estampa Press, and Open Letter Books, independent presses dedicated to literature in translation, and sit down with three publishers—Naveen Kishore of Seagull Books (Kolkota), Laura Huerga de Raig Verd (Barcelona), and Chad Post of Open Letter (Rochester)—to discuss publishing on the periphery.

Never forgetting its roots, this year’s Sant Jordi NYC will highlight Catalan language and culture in several exciting programs.

A daily lunchtime series (12 p.m. NYC, 18h in Barcelona) will explore the Mediterranean Diet and its literature. Each day, guests will gather around the table with a great Catalan chef: you’ll talk olive oil with Ferran Adrià, vegetables with Fina Puigdevall and Martina Puigvert, prawns with Mateu Casañas, legumes with Marc-Puig Pey, desserts with Christian Escribà, and wine with Josep Roca. You’ll shop Barcelona’s renowned Mercat de la Boqueria with Amanda Laporte. Having worked up an appetite, you’ll feast on a sumptuous buffet of Mediterranean literature about food, including The Sultan’s Feast, a 15th century Egyptian cookbook, Ricetti e Precetti, an Italian look at food and religion, and Salt Water, Josep Pla’s classic meditation on life on the Catalonian coast. For dessert, indulge in brief, English-language readings of Catalan classics.

The Catalan Institute of America has curated a special closing-day program: a Catalan-language program for children and young people. April 24th (10-12 NYC; 16-18 BCN).

Books are the heart and soul of Sant Jordi NYC, but it has even more to offer: live-streaming concerts, art, and even an augmented reality feature–plant roses and read books with Dragonet the Book-Loving Dragon! So pull up a chair, pour yourself a glass of wine, set out a plate of olives, and join us at this year’s Sant Jordi NYC. Find us at: santjordinyc.org.
