Bringing Catalonia’s beloved celebration of books and roses to New York City since 2014, this year the Sant Jordi USA Festival of Books, Roses & the Arts has changed its location but not its essence. In 2020 and 2021, due to the Covid-19 widespread, the festival was held online gaining an international audience from over more than 40 countries. However, this year emerging from the pandemic, the activities carried out will be both online and in-person. The festival is going hybrid and expanding to become the Sant Jordi USA Festival of Books, Roses & the Arts establishing a new center of operations in Jersey City, New Jersey. All organized by The Farragut Fund for Catalan Culture in the U.S. with the support of the Delegation of the Catalan Government in the United States of America, the Institut Ramon Llull, Amazon Crossing, the Jersey City Theater Center, the Film & Immersive Media Art and the Catalan Institute of America.

In partnership with the Jersey Theatre Center, the New Jersey City University, and the Word Bookstore in Jersey City, the festivity will host more than 10 activities from April 21 to April 24.

On Thursday, the organization will carry out a viewing of the 23-minute immersive experience of Close-Up/Primer Pla with musical and dance accompaniment, followed by a discussion of the techniques employed, the use of Catalan landscape and architecture, and the creative philosophy of the artists, Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger.

On Saturday, Espe Pons will present her exhibition ”Under the Light of the Sea” and she will discuss the story behind her research into the life of her grandfather’s youngest brother, tortured and executed by Franco. Further on that day, a dramatic reading of excerpts from Brigadistes will be held.

To finish, on Sunday the assistants will be able to view the documentary “There Is Still Someone in the Woods”, including interviews with the survivors of war and rape, followed by a discussion of the methodology of the Associació Cultura i Conflicte for converting journalistic research into theatrical and visual art. The closing of the day will consist of a gala dance program about the performance of three pieces: peace, peace, peace!, about Pau Casal’s music and devotion to peace; Dos vells pescadors (Two old fishermen), based on the Catalan musical form of the Havaneres; and Mort de gana (Dying of hunger), a comical piece based on a song by the Catalan satirical musicians of La Trinca.

There are still more activities to come, for more information check Sant Jordi USA’s website.
